My only but is the handle layout ..... if its got handles (I know most of my kitchens don't) I always run them horizontal so they all match, it looks so much better in my opinion, and doesn't compromise usuability at all. I often see kitchens like this and think that simple change would look much neater.

Just a small point that I have often wanted to raise for discussion on the forum.

I hate horizontal handles on this style of kitchen. I think it would look so wrong.

I'm with Chip on this one - sorry Daniel! Horizontal handles can look great on modern kitchen styles, but on this it would look pants.

Also done a few other bits & pieces; room skirting, boxing in pipes etc.

Granite should have been going in tomorrow, but they've been delayed so looking like it'll be Saturday. Good job I don't mind working weekends anymore!


As an aside, I had a bastard of a job spraying the doors. The finish is pretty crappy, particularly (mostly) on the centre panels.

I'm pretty sure it's my fault. I think I thinned the lacquer too much on the first coat, and applied too much as well, compounding the problem. The centre panels are veneered 8mm chipboard, and the veneer has lifted slightly due to too much moisture. At least I think that's the problem. Even though I sanded between coats, it's still very rough to the touch.

I explained this to the client, and told him I would be ordering replacement doors, and that I'd spray them & replace them at some point. He point blank told me not to bother, he was more than happy with them as they are.

It's good of him to say that, and it'll save me the cost and a LOT of hastle, but I just don't like leaving things that I wouldn't accept myself.

Each to their own, that's why I brought it up as I thought some of you might have a differing opinion considering most of you guys do more traditional English styles ..... Still think horizontal every day of the week though

Love this modern style! what's the other side of the island going to be? I'm guessing just a breakfast bar?
+ Them old style farmhouse kitchen sinks seem to be all the modern trend at the moment!
can't wait to see it with a granite counter all finished!

Granite went in a couple of weeks ago, or at least most of it did - the biggest, most labour-intensive piece (the one for the sink run) was exactly 100mm too short on the front edge!!!

Glad it was nothing to do with me! Anyway they re-made it & it went in last Saturday. I didn't bother taking any 'finished' pictures, as the client's dad fancies himself as a bit of a photographer & is going to do me some proper pictures when all the painting is finished off.
