I need a new kitchen. NOW. Yesterday would be good.

I've just had a stud wall removed to open up my kitchen/dining room (tiny space) and a new combi boiler put in. Now I need the kitchen to finish the job!

I registered so that i could blatantly peck all of your heads with my questions about kitchens and hope you'd impart some professional advice..

Is it ok on the forum to post plans that I've scribbled made myself to get peoples opinions on it? I have a water meter/stop tap (didn't want to type the other word) in a very awkward place and I'm struggling to make things fit.

So here are my issues..

Issue 1: The water meter/stop tap is about 700mm in from the back right corner on the back wall, it is making any plans i create asymmetrical and that's bugging me a little bit. It's about 360mm wide and currently juts out into the cabinet that's there (I could take a pic of this if you'd like to see?) Can any cabinets just be 'cut out' to accommodate it?

Issue 2: I want to keep the gas hob on the back wall in the center with a chimney hood above but I want to move the built in oven (under counter) to the right wall.
I've been told I can't do that as I'd then need two extractors..?? I never use an extractor for the oven, only the hob! So confused.


Issue 3: My new boiler is huge compared to the old one (much taller) My idea was to get a 900mm high wall unit and sit this on a  plinth base straight onto the worktop, adding more plinth above so that all the wall units line up at the top. Would this work?



P.S my current kitchen is an 'L' shape, left wall and right wall units only but I want the full 'U' shape. I also have an almost new dishwasher (slimline 450mm) and washing machine (free standing) that I don't want to get rid of as they cost a fortune!

I have priced up everything I would need from diy kitchens and including cabinets, doors, handles, sink, tap, hood, worktops, plinths, cornice etc etc comes to £2600 ish for a grey shaker style with walnut effect laminate tops. Has anyone any experience with diy kitchens? The seem good, blum hinges (I've been doing my homework) delivered rigid built but would appreciate other opinions. The only downside is waiting 4 weeks for delivery. I can't tell you how impatient I am to have this done. Anyway, I have attached some of my scribblings, would appreciate if people would see if I'm on the right track or not?

My next problem is finding a fitter near me...! Who knew it was so complicated. I do not want to go with any of the 'big' firms.

If so he would design & supply, but I would assume he has a good lengthy waiting list as would any decent fitter.

A lengthy waiting list is a very good thing I know, just wish I wasn't so impatient. I have carcasses rotting, doors that are 17 years old hanging at different angles and no bloody storage to work with whatsoever! not to mention the now humongous boiler (which is wonderful by the way) with pipes coming out top and bottom

Most decent fitters will have a decent waiting list, the jobs I've seen where they can get someone next week are often of poor quality. Its not always the case, do your reasearch into the fitter, if they are worth their salt any of their past customers wouldn't mind you popping in to view their work.

In answer to your issues:

1. As others have said, the stop tap can be moved to a more suitable location (such as under the sink) so I wouldn't worry about that.

2. As for needing 2 extractors, who the hell told you that? I've never heard of an extractor for a built-under oven before! It's not a problem to separate the oven & hob.

3. You could hide the boiler with a dresser-type unit, which would line up with the top of the wall units, and go down onto the worktops. Alternatively you could use a slightly larger wall unit (again, lined up with the wall units at the top) and box in the pipework below.

Have you included any end panels in the price you've got from DIY Kitchens? You'll need a few of those with that design, so that might bump the price up by a couple/few hundred pounds. You can do it without end panels, but the end result will look like it's been done on the cheap, particularly if you use DIY Kitchens units.

As others have said, Prem may cover Oldham. If he doesn't, I do.   I couldn't do it sooner than 4-6 weeks though...

Oldham is just past my travel limit really, and booking in september now.  

Looking at your plans first thoughts were to put the oven back where it was and put the 300 larder on the fridge side.  Looking at it from the dining area you see two tall items ( fridge and 300 tower ) blocking your view of the kitchen and making the room look narrower than it is.
Also the sink would benefit if you had an extra 300 on that run,  the plan needs tweeking.

Like JRB said end panels are a must if you want it looking really fitted,  so double check what you need.
