False hood canopy depth for range cooker

Hi

I'm looking to put a false cooker hood surround/canopy above my range cooker. Do these have to be built on site....presumably with MDF or plasterboard or some similar material, or do they come already built?

Also, how deep should the canopy be from the wall...? My cooker is 900 wide by 600 deep. I was wondering if maybe 400mm was enough, or does the hood have to cover the enitre range, so 600?

Are you intending to fit an extractor in this canopy? If so that would govern the depth of the canopy itself.

Also check the manufacturer's instructions for the minimum height at which it can be installed. If it's a dual fuel range I'm guessing gas rings therefore would be a minimum of 750mm high. I always find this a little low, especially for tall people so I tend to set it at about 850mm.

400mm depth should be adequate.

Yes, I intend to fit an extractor in the canopy. The question is probably what is the minimum size extractor that I need to fit above a 900mm by 600mm dual fuel range cooker...?

Does it have to be 50% or 75% of the area of the cooker...? or is there no minimum requirement?

If you're looking for a decent built-in extractor, you can't get much better than Westin. They do some great (powerful) extractors, and they're not stupidly priced (unless you start looking at custom ones!). You can also get remote control ones.

A company I used to work for used the SL900 range all the time, but I see they now do an SPC range which is newer.

I'd definitely recommend them.

As for size, for a 900 range cooker the SL900/70 or SPC700 (both 700mm wide) would be fine.

Bear in mind though that at 1000m3/h you'd need 6" ducting. Saw a special that Westin did once that needed 2x 8" ducts!!!
