Looking for Advice

Hi Everyone

I have just joined the forum so please bear with me. I am seriuosly considering chucking in the world of office work to become a kitchen fitter in south wales.

I have no previous kitchen fitting experience but am a very fast learner.

Could anyone please give me some advice?

Hi Phil, and welcome to our world

Work is still a bit tight in the kitchen fitting industry unless you're already established. Most of us now get work from recommends and we seem to do okay but you possibly need to try and find someone locally who will take you on and teach you a few skills. Problem is they're not going to be happy when you leave them and take all their work!!

You can get by with basic tools but it shows up on the finished article. You'll need to outlay a lot of money to buy all the kit that we use and then learn how to use it properly.

If you are serious, then you will need to find someone who will take you on as a labourer/fitters mate, which obviously doesnt pay as much as a kitchen fitter. You will then need to work alongside the kitchen fitters for a while and gradually start picking up new skills and gaining the confidence to use power tools. In the meantime I suggest that you slowly build up your tool collection, of power tools and hand tools which can take a few years and cost you a couple of thousand quid, maybe more. I would say only buy proffesional tools and not DIY stuff as it will pay in the long run. I would also recommend going on a health and safety course (you dont want to drill through your fingers!) and maybe a basic plumbing course. Its gonna be a long and winding road for you, but just persevere

Oh, and you will need good customer service skills too, and a high tolerance of abuse and criticism. As you will find, some Clints are great and just leave you alone. Then you will get others, that no matter how hard you try, you just cannot please them.

Agree with the rest, not the best time to start out.

Most kitchen fitters get in to the trade gradually, i don't think many stop work one day and start as a fitter the next.

I'ld try and get some nice easy jobs, do them on the weekends for family and friends, maybe do them for free to get the experiance. Start with putting flat-pack stuff together, it dosn't matter if it's a wardrobe or a kitchen unit, just get used to putting the stuff together and following instructions. An ideal "job" would be to fit some old or cheap units in a garage, with a worktop under it. These are the jobs that will give you an insight and you'll find what tools you need.

Most fitters can multi-task, this could be electrical, plumbing, plastering, tiling, etc. Doing a "dry-fit" won't get you many fits.

Once you do become compatant where will you get your work from? if you know already can you please tell me..!!
