Kitchen Refurbishment.

I fitted this German kitchen 19 years ago and the Client contacted me back in October asking if I could revamp it to give it a more modern look.

There was nothing wrong with any of the doors or cabinets or hinges or drawers......They just wanted to freshen it up, so I quoted them for a couple of new cabinets in matching White Woodgrain as the open shelf units and glass doors unit were all originally in a Vanilla colour as you can see in the pictures I took just before the refurb started, as well as all new doors, drawer fronts and Cornice/Pelmet.

The 19 year old sink, worktops and plinths were all still sound, so the wall tiles were removed and matching laminate upstands fitted. It goes to prove that Duropal still make the best laminate tops, in my humble opinion....!!

We made all the new cabinets, doors, drawer fronts, plant on panels and Cornice/Pelmet ourselves and they are all in a White Woodgrain. The doors and drawer fronts are all edged in a Stainless Steel faced ABS edging and all the other Clints were edged in matching White Woodgrain. Edgings are all 1mm thickness. The Stainless Steel Door & Drawer Fronts edgings have a dark grey ABS backing to them which gives the effect of the dark lines between the doors etc.

I changed some of the doors & drawer fronts to single elements rather than how they had been done originally. Just so it didnt look quite so "busy"....!! The drawer units below the Hob and Glass wall unit appear to be 6 individual drawers in the original photos, but in reality the 4 Pan drawers are actually 2 wide Blum drawer boxes with the narrower pan drawer fronts jointed together to form one front....

Thanks to JRB and the company he works for, for supplying me with the made to measure glass doors. They are a Tinted Black glass, but with the addition of the cool white LED internal lights, the glass looks a bit Blue......The Client loves the look, so thats all that matters in the end.

The wall unit height and the base unit height on these German cabinets is not the standard 720mm ......Base units doors are 710mm on a 715mm high carcass and the wall unit doors are 700mm on a 705mm high cabinet.

The glass wall unit was made a custom depth to allow for the thinner glass doors to line up with the front faces of the doors on the adjacent wall cabinets.

Edit. I forgot,....A new sloping cooker hood as well .....ducted out in 6" pipework!

The walls above the worktops were re-plastered but not by me.....The Client had used a good plasterer before so she got him to do it whilst I made the new doors and drawer fronts etc.

In the after pictures, some of the doors still needed to be adjusted, but I had to take the pictures when I did coz they were about to start decorating and getting all there gear out...

I forgot to say, the sink is the original Schock sink and the tap is the original Hansgrohe from 19 years ago.....

Did you have to cut the up-stand down for the window cill?   I use Duropal all the time, but the up-stands i have an issue with,  they are never straight.  Stand it on a long flat surface there will be 20mm gap either end.  The last one i did was so bad i couldn't get it right,  i had to cut the curve out with the rail saw.

The height of the MDF window sill i fitted dictated the height of the upstand....From memory, it ended up about 95mm high and I just set up my trusty ELU flip/table saw and ran all the lengths through once they had been cut to approximate lengths. I used a homemade Feather Board to keep them tight to the fence.

They were slightly bowed and the longest length was behind the sink. There was a slight gap underneath at both ends of about 2 or 3mm, but I just cut a few temporary sticks and wedged them between the ceiling and the top of the upstands until the adhesive had set. Then, transparent silicone all the way around.

I buy my Duropal from IDS and I dont think I've ever had a full length from them that has such a bad bow as what you describe Ray....??

They always come wrapped in a cardboard liner, but you would think they could apply an edging to the bottom of the upstand, admittedly. This would at least help towards the prevention of absorbtion of moisture which is what contributes to the bowing issue.
