Love the styling of the island

Few questions... are the plinths set back extra deep? maybe it#s just because they are stainless which might make them look set back in the pics, but gives it the more or a floated/wall hung look. In a good way like, but just wonder if i'm seeing it wrong?

Also was the ceiling set to take in to account the unit height or units made to measure to take in to account the ceiling height? I assume the latter seeing as ther is trim round the main part of the kitchen but not to the bank of 3 tall units to the right... yet still both go to the ceiling.

The plinths are not set back any further than standard, they probably look further set back due to the shadows and dark floor ..... And camera man

The units are made to measure in height to take into account the ceiling, but in all truth I feel I made a mistake not having a top trim on the all white side of the kitchen columns - I thought considering that side was all white, with no blue, the top trim was unnecessary, but in hindsight I wish it did have a white trim to match the trim style all round on the other side of the kitchen ..... Well seen Sir

Must admit I noticed that too but thought it worked quite well. If I was going to go for trim that side I would have kept it black though just to keep it in line with the rest of the kitchen and think it would complement the dark wine rack.

Also why isnt there a clad on panel on the boiler unit in black and the filler down the other side of the boiler unit, if there is one?

There's a white filler panel to the left of the boiler unit and I thought a blue trim panel running virtically in this part would make it look too fussy ...... Line of trim, line of filler and then line of cabinet ..... And for very long and boring reasons I had to have a filler panel there.

If we want to go really deep I actually also thought it would give an odd sense of symmetry that I wanted to avoid in a very assymetric kitchen design - assymetric Island worktop, assymetric ovens, assymetric wall units etc....

Please dont think Im slating your design. The kitchen looks great. Im just trying to improve my own designs and would probably have put the a blue panel upto the bottom of the wall unit. Just wondering your reason for not doing that.

If you are saying what I think you are saying the reason why I didn't finish the side of the boiler cabinet in blue was because I wanted to mimic the island worktop/down stand and cabinet colour relationship, with the boiler/wall units and glass colour relationship ….. so if you look at the kitchen head on you have two white 'r' shapes illustrated in the island worktop and wall unit cabinetry - having the side of the boiler carcass finished in blue would ruin this I think as the inside of the island down stand is finished in the white of the stone. If that makes sense

So in short the reason for the island down stand was due to the boiler cabinet that I had no choice with …… I find when I'm designing, all my kitchen elements have relationships with each other that mostly only I know about but hopefully subconsciously makes people like them - I hope

Completely agree. I think all considered design takes reference to other elements in the room, even if as you say it's subconscious.

Here's an example on one of the current jobs which i've posted on here before. (sorry it's appeared in 3 threads now but it's just a good example that springs to mind)

In this picture you can see an electric meter in the top of the picture above the door. The builders were supposed to move it but didn't in the end and all they could come up with was to build a cupboard around, trouble was it was going to look just like a random box on the wall, so they gave up and it was down to us to come up with some thing that wasn't going to look boxy and ruin the clean lines in the room.



9 times out of 10 I think if you can't disguise something completely, then make a feature out of it. So I came up with this... (the MDF casing you can see behind the door)



looks odd on it's own doesn't it, with it's sloped boxing. But not when you take in to account the other elements in the room. In this picture you can see why.

Above the extractor unit you can see the skylight which has a slopped ceiling (there is another skylight just like it in the room too) then just to the right of that you can see a small angled part of the wall which covers the supports for the new steel that went in the room. again there is another one of those too. So there are already a few sloped elements in the room.



So once the MDF casing is painted in with the wall colour it will have reference and won't stick out half as much as if it was just boxed round square with a couple of doors on it like the builders planned.

So yeah I completely agree that certain design elements look odd in isolation but when viewed in a room as a whole it makes sense when you 'read' the room

The devil is in the detail with all design, but none more so than kitchen design, a point often lost on Clints
