Girlies that is ..... although you're likely to have met me before at Screwfix.

I'm an independent kitchen designer and I lurk here to pick up opinions and tips ... and to stick my oar in.

I'm unusual in that I charge for my kitchen designs and don't necessarily sell the customers a kitchen ... although I usually recommend what sort of kitchen they should buy and sometimes recommend an individual company or cabinet maker (and do some further work with them to finalise the details).

I also do "trade" work - client visits/designs for small kitchen companies or individual cabinet makers ... or, sometimes hand drawn sketches, of their plans (particularly good for hand made, bespoke kitchens).

Oh and I probably swear more than most of you do ... but not in front of the customers ....

I always charge for designs, I mean every time even though i supply and fit too. I put my design fee up from £200 to £400 and saw an increase in work. I also no longer deduct it from the kitchen price should they go ahead.I think it sends out a signal that I'm professional and will do a professional job. Admittedly I've outsourced the design to a designer a cpl times lately as he's got all bloody day to faff around dressing up the 3d images and he charges me £150 which seems fair to me.

After all I'm giving them a huge amount of knowledge and am cheaper than a good solicitor.

Personally, I use compusoft winner for my designs as it's so adaptable (compared to planit and 20 20 whom i used previously).

I often work with suppliers making hand made, inset framed furniture ... so do most of my plans and sketches by hand.

When it's something simple and/or I need to do it quickly ... I use Kitchendraw ... simply because it's handy to be able to use it when and if I need it, rather than having to shell out for a programme I wouldn't use very often.

I've used Planit and 20:20 in the past but have never tried Compusoft.
