No,you didn't touch a nerve as such, I just didn't see the point of your post.
If you are on such a tight budget, then you shouldn't be trying to save 10 or 20 quid on a door - you should (and it may be too late for this now) be buying the house without a kitchen fitted, and getting a large chunk off the price. Then take some of that money & buy a budget kitchen for your F-I-L to fit. That way, your savings will be in the 100's rather than the 10's. With Barratt being such a large company though I don't know if they would do this, but it's worth asking. I know that smaller and medium-sized building firms are open to this kind of customisation.
Moores are expensive - obviously Barratts will be getting it at a huge discount based on the volume they buy across all their developments countrywide. So you're right, they do have a kind of monopoly. They sell cheap to the builders, then charge high prices to people like you who want additions or alterations at a later date.
Going back to the original question you asked, I don't think you'll find a door considerably cheaper than the price you've been quoted (which is Moore's list price). I may be wrong though, and someone else may suggest somewhere.
