Snow Tyres or Snow chains?

This could be my specialist subject as I have a modicum of experience dealing with issues of traction but I've just got back from the boozer and microwaved a curry which is ready now! So for now, how about moving to East Anglia, it's mainly flat.

i ve tyres on mine , did it last month , chains are only when the entire road is covered in snow and a pain to keep fitting / taking off ...fitting again ..etc , if your winter tyres don t cut it ..you re probably stuck at home ?

Didn't realise that you are already there! Anyway I think the answer has to be winter tyres and snow chains if you want a belt and braces solution.

Re traction I grew up on a farm and have also worked in the Alps so I've seen all sorts of solutions on all sorts of vehicles. If you want a real cheap alternative to snow chains just to get you out of a tight spot you can get away with some polyprop rope. On steel rims you can just wrap it round the tyre by looping it through the holes in the rim and tying off. I know it works as I have done it on an old Marina van. Give a farmer a piece of baler twine or rope and we can fix anything! It might not last as long as chains though.....

i considered the rope solution on my vivaro, i think on modern cars there isnt enough clearance between wheel and brake disc to get rope through without it chaffing.

My understanding is that I only need to put winter tyres on the driven wheels, or am I wrong? Same as with Snow chains only on the driven wheels.
I have plenty of spare steel rims as I have alloys on my van, so I could have the winter tyres fitted to them and swop them back when the spring arrives. The consensus seems to be tyres rather than chains. My worry is whether or not the tyres will drag the van up the slope or whether I would be better off with the chains?

One of my mates suggested I leave the van at the top of the road from the previous day!.....Full of tools!........Out of sight of my house!........All night! GULP!
I had to try and explain to him that he would be more likely to see my "Mrs" stood up there touting for business than see my van there overnight
How many of you guys would leave there van in those circumstances?

i have left mine part way around my estate but there was 12" of snow so could see may folk getting to it but i didnt sleep that well thinking about it.

What times your missus going to be on the corner?
