Fitting a wide hob over a narrow cabinet - possible?

Hello,

Does anyone know if it's possible to fit a 90cm gas hob that has an 850mm cutout over a pan drawer which is 80cm wide or (alternatively 2x 60cm wide pan drawers)?

The worktop would be laminate, around 40mm thick and the hob says it needs 80mm space below it - so would I need to chop the top bits off the pan drawer to make the space? Does anyone have any experience of this type of situation? I'm kind of in a bind over this as I'd like to use IKEA cabinetry but I've just found out there may be a problem.

Any help would be highly appreciated!

I'd say it's possible. Are you sure the overall depth of the hob from the top of the burner grilles to very bottom is 80mm. I haven't come across one that protrudes 40mm below a 40mm worktop.

You'll find that the 80mm is distance from combustible material. I.e. heat will be given off from the bottom of the hob.

The hob is a Bosch PCR915B91E 5 burner. I've rechecked the online manual and it looks like it actually needs around 35mm clear space beneath it (minimum) and the hob itself is 45mm thick where it sits in the worktop. I think it also requires a heatshield but the manual is not too clear to me at this hour.

But assuming that it does need 35mm clear space below - would cutting this amount out of the sides of the cabinet (or one side of 2 cabinets if I go for the second drawer configuration) affect the structural integrity of the units?

No, it won't affect the strength of the units at all.

Why do you want to use Ikea cabinets, BTW? Most folks would do what they can to avoid them at all costs...

You will be fine,you will have to fix the base units to the wall then remove the front rail from the 800 drawer unit,fit the back rail vertically and this will give support,can you not ammend the layout to incorporate a 900 drawer pack,this eliminates the problems you may hit trying to get the hob clipped down?

Hello and thanks for the replies.

I want to use ikea because of the price to be honest. There's been a lot of work done on the house and our budget won't stretch to even the likes of wickes/b&q, especially given the number of cabinets required.

Plus I've been into ikea a couple of times and had a good look at their kitchens; for the price they seemed to me to be solid and good looking with useful interior fittings as well. My sis had a howdens kitchen fitted for £5k and the quality wasn't noticably different to ikea. If you know of any good cheap alternatives to ikea I'm all ears.

Re. using a 900mm base cabinet - I would, but ikea's biggest base cabinets are 800mm

Thanks for highlighting the need to adjust the rails - I'm a total newbie so this sort of advice is invaluable. If I understand right, the rails are the cross planks at the front and back of the cabinet. Wouldn't these need adjusting even if I used a 900mm cabinet? Also, would removing the front rail not make the cabinet wobbly at the front? Could it not just be cut back?

It won't be wobbly if you fix the units in place first as I said previously,the units either side will support it along with the rail at the back,I always remove the front rail on this type of set up as you have to be careful your hob cut out is not too close to the back of the worktop(check appliance manual assuming it's a gas hob,I normally start my cut out 45 mm from front edge for this reason)
can you not use the 800 unit with a 750 hob above it,and a 900 hood above that,I fit this all the time and it looks better than a big cumbersome 900 hob in my opinion

Sometimes you need to router the side panels of the carcasses which the hob is sitting on otherwise the hob will fail on then.
As for the ikea kitchens. they arnt that bad for the money they cost but I do find the internal wirework pretty poor. Id avoid all wirework in the wall carcasses and if you are thinking of getting a le mans or carosel get them from somewhere else.
