Hi All Some advice please !

Hi all,

Need some input from all you nice kitchen fitters!

For the last 2 months we've been on a 3 day week in work,and I'm finding it a bit hard at the mo (are'nt we all)!

So me and my mate have removed 2 of our friends kitchens whilst we've been off .

So we've been thinking of doing this to earn extra cash and starting up, we'd remove all cabinets,worktops and appliances, and dispose of it all,cap off all water pipes and isolate or make safe all electrics and clean the area,ready for the kitchen fitters.We've worked out we could do it and it would be cheaper than people hiring an average size skip.

We dont know if this would work,would you lads use somebody like us?
Do you do the strip out's and disposal of old kitchens yourself ?
I must stress we would only do the strip out no fitting of the kitchens (we're not that skillful).

Hi Dave and welcome to the forum

Advice is what we're here for so here goes............

I work by myself and here's how I do it:

Average cost of 6yd skip here in the South: £150 - £200

Usual rate for strip out and disposal ie chuck it in the skip would be 1 day, therefore £150 - £200

Also during the first day I would be draining down water to disconnect the sink, replacing the incoming stopcock 9 times out of ten, replumbing all hot and cold services and providing isolation valves so any further draining down would not be necessary. Material cost circa £50.

You also need to bear in mind that if you need to disconnect a gas hob there may not be an existing service valve, therefore you shouldn't really be doing any work of this nature and may need to hire the services of someone competent - about £75 for this.

Even disconnecting electrical services need to be done with a degree of competency.

So, over £500 then.

Chances are you could do it cheaper but you also need a Waste Carriers Licence if you're going to be disposing of trade waste. Ok, if you turn up at your local Household Waste Recycling site in your car you won't get stopped but how many trips are you going to have to make in your car?

Most kitchen fitters will have a skip for the duration of the job anyway for all the packaging, worktop and other offcuts, emptying plaster buckets, tile offcuts, grout buckets, etc etc so I personally doubt if your venture would work.

And as most of us start our kitchens on Mondays you would only be able to do it on a weekend to be ready for us so it's still only one days work a week!

That's probably not the advice you wanted to hear but it's just my perspective!

Thanks Stretch, Im a spark and my mates a plumber (both competant, but I'm not in a scheme and he's not corgi registered).
All rubbish was going to be dumped on our mates farm, (we both have vans) electricals and sinks etc taken by our trailer to local dump in my car (but i know what you mean )
Weekends are not a problem for us or evenings.(need the work)
Was thinking of charging between £250 to £300!

But, if you guys would'nt use us or if there's no call for it ,that dont matter,does it !

I personally wouldn't use your service. I and most fitters i know can have a kitchen ripped out and many of the units built in the first day.

So i couldn't justify paying you £250.

I'd have to agree with KJC David. All of us are in the same boat at the moment and can't justify paying out for jobs we can easily do ourselves.

Besides anything else, what will be done with the stuff when it's "dumped on your mates farm"?

Incinerated? Not exactly great for the environment we're told. Surely it would be better if all those chipboard carcases were mashed up and converted to a B&Q worktop where at least the professional fitters stand little chance of having our circular saw blades dulled when we find a screw in it?

On further reflection, your venture sounds a little short lived and possibly not entirely legal.

I'm with NICEIC so that's that covered and as for the waste, I usually pile it up and pay a registered waste carrier (certs' provided) between £50 and £100 to take it away.

Depending on the size and complexity of the kitchen, we're usually fitting carcases in at the end of the first day, ripping out the old kitchen is usually a couple of hours.

Recently i've done a couple of fits for under a £1000. This will have included some electrics and removing all waste from site. You'ld be asking for 25% of the fit price which would kill the job.

I think (not 100%) that most of the fitters working for sheds will need a waste certificate.

There's probably work there, but more as a full time job working for a large fitting company and someones already doing that.
